One of the prime focuses of the contemporary R&D organizations is towards connecting and re-orienting their research in order to benefit the society. This posits two paradigms, namely R&D for society and connecting society with R&D that demands for establishing perpetual and efficient channels between research organizations and social entities. Initiatives undertaken with this approach are highly encouraged and on uprise, these demand for fair efforts and sustained financial and institutional support. Performance evaluation of researchers working under this milieu is non-trivial in the absence of proper documentation and scarcity of impact studies. Hence, measuring the impact of R&D on society involves a multifaceted approach, considering various indicators that reflect both direct and indirect effects such as jobs created as a result of R&D investments, productivity linked to R&D innovations, improvements in public health, changes in quality of life or public satisfaction linked to innovations, contributions to sustainability, gather qualitative and quantitative data from stakeholders, including businesses, policymakers, and the public.
The session designed to address efforts of R&D organizations and to develop insights to develop mechanism for the performance evaluation of researchers working on the interface of R&D and society to address emerging issues and challenges of R&D interventions for societal benefits. As technology rapidly evolves the gap between innovation and raising concerns about equity, access, and potential unintended consequences that needs stakeholder engagement and R&D initiatives for inclusive and responsive intervention for sustainable development and positive societal impact.
